The full-back positions haven’t always been Wales’ strongest suit, but Sherwood has to get in this top 25 simply because of the testimony of the great Sit Stanley Matthews who described him as the most difficult opponent he came up against.

That’s some testimony from the wing wizard who is regarded as one of England’s finest in history.

Played over a 10-year period for Wales, 1946-56, and also played more than 350 games for Cardiff.

Just missed out on the World Cup in 1958, having retired from football he went to work as a security officer for the National Coal Board.
