Barclay honoured for work ‘on the buses’

-

A MAN who works to improve bus services throughout Wales has been awarded an OBE.

Barclay Davies, director of the charity Bus Users, was honoured for services to Public Transport and Government, and travelled to Windsor Castle to recieve his honour from Princess Anne on November 8.

Mr Davies, from Gelli, said: “I am deeply honoured to receive this award. I am fortunate to work with many talented colleagues and this award is just as much a recognition of them and the work of Bus Users.

“It is an exciting time for public transport in Wales with the recent launch of the Llwybr Newydd: Wales Transport Strategy and moves to improve air quality, decarbonise transport vehicles and improve public transport options for all.

“I look forward to continuing to champion bus passengers and to work towards bringing people and communities together through accessible, inclusive transport”.

In welcoming the award, Bus Users chief executive Claire Walters said: “We are delighted that Barclay’s work is being recognised in this way.

“Our campaigns, alternative dispute resolution services and bus compliance monitoring have led to real change and improved services for passengers across Wales.

“Barclay and his team will continue their work to improve access to inclusive, sustainable transport with all the social, environmental and economic benefits that this brings”.

As Director for Bus Users in Wales, Barclay has facilitated over 200 events bringing passengers together with local transport providers.

He has represented the voice of passengers and local communities with the people responsible for planning and delivering services, and promoted the bus as an agent for change in improving air quality and tackling congestion.

During the pandemic, Barclay and his team campaigned for support for operators so passengers could continue to make essential journeys, and he promoted the Bus Users’ #BeBusKind #ByddwychYnGaredigArYBws message to operators and passengers calling on people to respect each other while travelling, particularly those unable to wear face coverings.
