Profiteering as the poorest pay most

-

MR JD Haskell (letters) believes, with myself, that more honesty is needed with electricity companies. His recent bills have shot up to almost double, and it’s the same for everyone.

However, he/we should spare a thought for the less well-off. The majority of newer social housing properties are fitted with “pre-payment” meters. The households are forced to pay upfront for energy, at much higher rates, which leads to “fuel poverty”.

Those lower earners struggle, especially carers, nurses and pensioners, who are left with a choice of heat or eat.

The unfairness of the situation is becoming extreme.

Everyone remembers adverts saying how energy costs would be cheaper with so-called “green energy”. When will that begin?

It’s not as if energy companies need to expand the infrastructure. The grid constantly needs maintenance but costs were previously covering that.

What we see now is extreme profiteering and the less well-off paying the most and it’s wrong.
