Cardiff Barrage to close for filming of TV show

-

CARDIFF Bay Barrage will be closed for two days while filming takes place for a popular Amazon Prime show.

The closure will last for most of the day on Wednesday and Thursday next week while a production unit shoots scenes for the Alex Rider adventure series.

The barrage route will be closed from 7am to 9pm on both days. A diversion for pedestrians and cyclists will be in place via Pont y Werin bridge, Cardiff Council has confirmed. The route will not be accessible between the Penarth side and the Barrage cafe. The barrage car park and fishing arm will also be closed to visitors during these times.

The play area and skate park will be accessible, but only from the Cardiff Bay side of the Barrage.

Navigational access for boats will continue as normal through the locks, the council added.

It’s not the first time filming for Alex Rider has taken place in the capital. In March last year, the area around City Hall and Cardiff Crown Court was transformed into a London street for the show. Actor Otto Farrant, who plays the title role, was spotted at the scene.

The show revolves around Alex Rider, an ordinary teenager who is enlisted to work on behalf of MI6, where he uses skills he didn’t know he had to become a spy. It’s based on the book series by author Anthony Horowitz. In 2006, a film version of the first book, Stormbreaker, was released starring Alex Pettyfer.

In the Amazon Prime show, Farrant stars alongside Line of Duty star Vicky McClure and Game of Thrones actor Brenock O’Connor.
