A “COWARD” and a “bully” poured boiling water over his partner from a kettle and punched her in the head when she accidentally kicked him.

He also elbowed her in the face during a separate assault.

Phillip Hanlon, 43, of Cardiff, made his girlfriend’s life a misery by subjected her to frequent physical and verbal abuse. The couple had been in a relationship for three years when the abuse came to a head and the victim reported matters to police.

A sentencing hearing at Cardiff Crown Court yesterday heard the victim was mopping the floor at her home in Grangetown when the defendant ran down the stairs and shouted at her: “What the f*** are you doing?”. She told him she was mopping the floor and he responded: “Hurry up, you mongo [sic] c*** I want more coffee, have you made it yet?”

The victim picked up the kettle, which she had boiled, but Hanlon grabbed her hand and pulled it, causing the water to spill over her leg. Prosecutor Jenny Yeo said the victim was wearing joggers and the water caused her skin to blister and later fall off.

On October 17, 2021, when the victim returned home from walking her dog, Hanlon pushed her over a settee, causing her to accidentally kick him in the stomach. She apologised but the defendant said: “I’ll f ****** kill you.”

Hanlon then punched her in the head, pulled her to the floor and threatened to break her ankles before punching her again to the head. On October 18, 2021 Hanlon elbowed the victim in the face as he walked through a door she was holding open.

The defendant, of Hansen Street, Butetown, was arrested and claimed he was acting in self defence. He later pleaded guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm and two counts of assault by beating.

The victim said she was also looking to move away from Cardiff as she was scared Hanlon would “come get her”.

In mitigation, Richard Ace said his client suffers with depression, anxiety and PTSD.

Sentencing, Judge David WynnMorgan said: “Men who hit women are cowards, you are a coward. You are also on the evidence available to the court a bully as well.”

Hanlon was sentenced to 16 months’ imprisonment. He will serve half that in custody before being released on licence.
