Heartbreak for fans, but still so proud of players

- BRANWEN JONES, RYAN O’NEIL and MOLLY DOWRICK

IT BEGAN with excitement and anticipation, descended into nail-biting nerves and finished with heartbreak.

Our photographers were out across the region as Wales took on Iran in a crucial Group B clash at the football World Cup in Qatar.

Amid the gamut of emotions, one thing was constant – the pride a nation felt in the players who had given them this chance to cheer on Wales at sport’s greatest international showpiece.

From Cardiff to Newport and Merthyr, fans joined to endure the drama, while pupils from across South Wales saw their lessons stopped so fans of all ages could enjoy a game their parents and grandparents had waited decades to see.
