System isn’t producing enough talented players

-

WITH Wales not firing on all four cylinders and attracting the ire of supporters and pundits alike, it is somewhat ironic they now want Warren Gatland back.

After so many years of negativity towards him, regardless of the success he had along with Sean Edwards, constantly bemoaning Warrenball, maybe they shouldn’t have looked the gift horse in the mouth so frequently.

There is no way of pleasing the Welsh public when things do not reach their fickle expectations. At least they have stopped blaming the referee – in fact now with TMO there are calls of too much interference.

Regardless of this, there are questions that need answering in the preparation of players for international rugby.

The ability to play 80 minutes of high intensity rugby with a level of skill and decision making is not at a level for consistent success. The fitness and commitment are quickly remedied but to have the flow of suitable players into the system is failing.

For some time it has become apparent that the structure is amiss and the development of young players in numbers from school/ academy/club/region is not a smooth process and at each level lacks a meaningful continuum of competitive exposure and expectation.

The regions and their results have been bemoaned for some time.

This means the best, only in isolation (Jac Morgan), rise to the surface and ipso facto leaders are not identified.

To appoint a new coach is merely a finger in the dam approach as he can only manage what is at his disposal.

It is easy for media and all and sundry to come out of the woodwork with their opinions but the negativity solves nothing. I am concerned a knee-jerk response could result in an “out of the fire into the frying pan” scenario. The assumption that a new coach would solve all the problems is a long shot and if that fails who do these pundits get their knives out for then? A chef is as good as his ingredients.
