A KNIFE-WIELDING teenager walked into a shop and threatened to stab a former friend before chasing him down the street as he rode off on a bike.

The horrifying incident was caught on CCTV footage. Ashlee Omar, 19, entered a Cardiff shop at 1.25pm on August 7 and approached Rhadi Alsharif while armed with a kitchen knife.

He was in the shop buying some goods when he was confronted by the defendant who said, “Yo, yo, you want some beef?”

A sentencing hearing at Cardiff Crown Court on Monday heard Omar ran at the victim who backed off to the back of the store.

He swore at him multiple times as Mr Alsharif though he was going to be stabbed.

Omar lowered the knife and “appeared to be coming to his senses” as the shopkeeper remonstrated with him. Prosecutor Laurence Jones said Mr Alsharif walked out of the shop in Splott followed by Omar.

The victim tried to ride off on his bike but the defendant attempted to stab him in the leg.

The next day Mr Alsharif reported the matter to police and Omar was arrested. He later pleaded guilty to affray and threatening a person with a knife.

The defendant, of Tweedsmuir Road, Tremorfa, was in breach of a community order for for aggravated vehicle taking on October 18 last year.

He was pursued by police but failed to stop and tried to escape, but he collided into the wall of a house.

He ran off but was arrested shortly later. His DNA and fingerprints were found inside the car.

In mitigation, Andrew Kendal said his client had limited antecedence and is only 19 years old.

He said the defendant had considered Mr Alsharif a friend and was remorseful.

He said Omar’s life had “lost structure” following the loss of his job, his abuse of nitrous oxide and his brother receiving a sentence of life imprisonment in 2018.

Sentencing, Judge Paul Hobson said: “This was a serious and dangerous incident involving a knife committed while you were on a Crown court community order with which you failed to comply.”

Omar was sentenced to 12 months’ detention in a young offender institution. He will serve half his sentence in custody before being released on licence.
