Acclaimed restaurant announces shock immediate closure

-

A RENOWNED Welsh restaurant has announced its shock closure 15 months after opening.

Alium, based at The Pumphouse in Barry, opened to rave reviews in March 2022 and was the brainchild of Cardiff-born chef Antonio Simone, also known for The Humble Onion in Dinas Powys and the recently opened Poca in Cardiff.

On Tuesday, the Barry restaurant announced that it will close its doors with immediate effect.

Announcing the news on social media, management said: “It has been one hell of a ride, we have had ups and down, questioned ourselves, diversified and tried everything to maintain our high standards whilst still making it a viable business.

“Sadly with so many factors combined the perfect storm has been created, as such we can no longer continue to trade. We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone that supported us and making the dream come true.

“In addition a huge thank you to the staff (past and present); the team behind Alium were the best bunch of people and they truly made it what it was. So for that we shall be forever grateful.”

Alium was hugely popular with diners after taking over the space previously inhabited by the awardwinning Hang Fire Southern Kitchen.

Responding to the news on social media, people shared their disappointment that Alium would be no more.

One person said: “I’m so sorry to hear this. We ate with you several times and loved every meal. Such a loss of great quality food at a great place with great staff.”

Alium added that they have or will be e-mailing everyone who had booked a future reservation at the restaurant.
