Work races ahead on a new BMX bike track for city

-

A HUGE new BMX racetrack is set to open this summer in Cardiff and is already taking shape, as the picture above shows.

The racetrack will open on the site of Riverside Park in Llanrumney this July after being approved in 2021 by Cardiff Council.

The 400m track is being built on a field at Riverside Park near rugby and football pitches. It will be the first international standard track in Wales and one of only three in the UK with an “elite” 8m start hill. The track will be operated by Cardiff BMX Racing Club, a charitable organisation with the objective of promoting community participation in BMX racing and cycling. The club offers coaching and guidance from British Cycling registered coaches to members and non-members.

The club has members of all levels with some competing in world championships but has been without a racetrack for the last six years. The new racetrack will provide members with a place to train as well as attract new riders to the sport. Photos taken this week show work progressing on the facility with construction workers on-site and the structure itself partially built

During the winter, building work was paused due to the bad weather but has now restarted. A Cardiff BMX Racing Club spokesperson said: “We appreciate the support from the local community and especially the Rugby Club who have been patient and supportive of the effort we are making to improve sporting facilities in the area. We aim to open the new facility in July and we can’t wait to welcome everyone.”
