Royal treatment: British performer Jeannette Charles often portrayed Queen Elizabeth due to her uncanny resemblanc­e to the monarch. She appeared in films such as Naked Gun, Austin Powers and National Lampoon’s European Vacation and dressed as the Queen to give her windows a good wash.

1981

Mucking in: Louis the chimp, star of the PG Tips adverts, proved helpful when a spot of spring cleaning was needed at his home at Twycross Zoo.

1960

House proud: EastEnders and Carry On film star Dame Barbara Windsor did not mind getting her hands dirty when it came to cleaning up at home. She was just 15 when she made her West End debut in the musical Love From Judy

1954

Keep your nose clean: British acting legend Thora Hird scooped up three Baftas in a career that spanned more than 100 films and appeared in TV comedies like Last Of The Summer Wine, In Loving Memory and Meet The Wife. She was just eight weeks old when she made her acting debut appearing on stage with her mother.

1959

Kitchen sink drama: Rock ‘n’ roll singer Marty Wilde and his bride-to-be Joyce Baker spent the day before their wedding making sure all the washing-up was done at the home of his parents in Greenwich.

1958

A new broom: A 20-year-old Una Stubbs got busy sprucing up her new flat before her marriage to The Onedin Line actor Peter Gilmore. Una went on to find TV fame in Sherlock and as Alf Garnett’s daughter Rita in the sitcom Till Death Us Do Part.

1967

On a roller: Coronation Street favourite Jean Alexander had her mop at the ready when she visited Mount Pleasant School, at Clayton-le-Moors, in Lancashire to give children tips on how to tackle playing some Corrie characters for their school project. She showed nine-year-old Jeanette Scott how to play her on-screen alter ego pub cleaner Hilda Ogden.

Coming clean: Aggie MacKenzie and Kim Woodburn became household names for showing viewers how banish the dirt in Channel 4 show How Clean Is Your House?

1946

Light fantastic: Horror film star Vincent Price got busy sitting on a wall to polish up a lamp. The actor famously provided the voiceover on Michael Jackson’s Thriller video.
