Warning as junior doctors in Wales to strike again

-

THE Welsh Government has issued an important warning ahead of the junior doctor strikes which are set to take place on March 25.

Junior doctors will walk out for a full 96 hours between Monday, March 25, and Friday, March 29.

With the strikes taking place so close to the Easter bank holiday weekend the Welsh Government is urging people to take action now.

They are advising people to ensure they don’t run out of medicines over the next two weeks as it may take GPs and pharmacy services longer to process prescriptions during this period.

The head of NHS Wales, Judith Paget, has warned the impact on services over the strike period will be significant.

Appointments and procedures planned to take place that week will be rescheduled as a result.

Junior doctors’ pay has been cut by almost 30% in real terms since 2008 levels.

The Welsh Government offered doctors a 5% pay increase last year, which was the lowest in the UK and lower than recommended by the DDRB (the review body for Doctors’ and Dentists’ Remuneration).

Ms Paget said: “We ask people to use alternatives to emergency departments if their need is not critical during the strike period. Alternatives include NHS 111 online or by phone and pharmacies.

“If your appointment is not going ahead your health board will contact you to let you know. If you aren’t contacted please attend your appointment as planned.

“Your local health board will provide the latest information in your area.”

She added: “If you receive repeat prescriptions plan ahead before the Easter Bank Holidays. Make sure you order your repeat prescriptions at least seven days in advance.”

Junior doctors have already carried out strike action this year with 72-hour walkouts in January and February. This round is their longest so far with a full four-day walkout planned.
