Driver died after van hit tree on roundabout

A “LOVING father, grandfathe­r, son, brother, and friend” died after he lost control of his white Ford Transit at a roundabout before the vehicle collided with a tree in the centre of the roundabout island.

Darran Medd, a van driver from Merthyr Tydfil, died at the scene of the crash on June 6 last year at Tredomen roundabout on the A472 in Hengoed, Newport Coroners’ Court recorded in a written inquest.

Roof tiler Mr Medd, 56, had been travelling alone when the incident occurred at 2.20pm.

Officers attended along with personnel from the South Wales Fire and Rescue Service, Wales Air Ambulance, and Welsh Ambulance Service.

Mr Medd’s medical cause of death was recorded as multiple injuries. Senior coroner for Gwent Caroline Saunders recorded a formal conclusion of a road traffic collision.

“As Darran approached the Tredomen roundabout he lost control of the vehicle and continued ahead onto the roundabout island where he collided with a tree. “Darran suffered multiple fatal injuries and died at the scene.”

In the days following Mr Medd’s death his family paid tribute to him describing him as a “wellloved” man who will be “missed deeply”. They said: “Our loving father, grandfathe­r, son, brother, and friend Darran was tragically taken from us far too soon.

“As a family we have received an outpouring of kindness and supportive words to which we are extremely grateful. “Darran was well loved and will be missed deeply by all.

“We would like to thank the emergency services and members of the public for their efforts that day.”
