A HUSBAND struck his wife in the face with a pint glass after she found out he had been talking to another woman.

The injury left her with cuts to her eyebrow, which required stitches, and swelling to her eye.

Peter Briody, 44, wounded his wife at their home in Barry on June 2 last year after he armed himself with the glass.

He was initially given a suspended sentence by the court but it was later discovered he had exposed his penis at a hotel for which he was facing legal proceedings.

A sentencing hearing at Cardiff Crown Court heard the defendant and the victim had been in a relationship for 17 years and had two children together.

At around 8pm the victim heard Briody on the phone to someone, who he said was a colleague, but after she grabbed the phone she saw a woman’s name.

An argument began with the defendant, who had been drinking, being verbally abusive towards the victim.

Without warning he turned towards her and struck her to the left side of her face with a pint glass in his hand.

She began bleeding profusely from her eye and she fell back causing injury to her arm.

The victim attended Barry police station and Briody was arrested and taken to Cardiff Bay police station.

He admitted causing injuries to the victim but said he had headbutted her and not assaulted her with a glass.

Having been taken to the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff the victim was treated for two wounds to her left eyebrow, which required stitches, swelling to her left upper eyebrow, and bruises to her left forearm. She also had glass removed from eyebrow.

In a victim personal statement she said: “I’m frightened of him attending our family home. He is a large strong individual but I never imagined he could physically attack me in the way he has done... I dread him returning to the home and interacting with our children in the intoxicated and belittling way he has done previously.”

Prosecutor Hannah MeredithJones said Briody was also to be dealt with for an offence of exposure at a hotel in Wiltshire on February 22.

He had consumed a large amount of alcohol and was walking around the hotel naked from the waist down.

The defendant was seen by a woman through a window and he proceeded to knock on her door and said: “Hello beautiful girl”.

The police were called and two empty vodka bottles were found in his room.

Briody, of Queen Street, Lochmaben, Dumfries and Galloway, pleaded guilty to section 20 wounding and exposure. The court heard was of previous good character.

The defendant was previously given a suspended sentence by Judge Shoman Khan for the wounding offence but it was not known at the time he had been charged with the exposure offence.

Upon the court learning about the latest proceedings the initial sentence was rescinded.

Defence barrister Mark Evans argued his client had carried out good work in regards to his issues with alcohol and had employment with good wages.

Judge Khan told Briody he did not make any criticism of him for the exposure offence not being known to the court.

The defendant was sentenced to 12 months’ imprisonment and was made subject to a restraining order for four years.
