Improvements planned for popular city park
SIGNIFICANT improvements have been proposed for a popular park in Cardiff featuring a new cafe and improved basketball court. A new masterplan details the proposed transformation of Canal Park that runs along Dumballs Road in Butetown.
Cardiff Council have commissioned urban design, planning and landscape architecture firm The Urbanists to develop a plan for Canal Park.
The masterplan is a long-term proposal with details of changes that
Reporter the company suggests would improve the area as well as identifying unique aspects of the park and key priorities from the local community.
A number of community engagement events have taken place since the project began in November 2023. Through these events community members have highlighted five ambitions they have for the development of the park. These include celebrating the heritage of the site, making it a safe place for everyone, safer and better paths across the park with spaces for cyclists, visible greenery with more colours and different plants and a wider range of accessible facilities managed by the local community.
To prioritise these community ambitions, new proposed projects include a cafe with toilets and baby changing rooms, a resurfaced and improved basketball court with new flood lighting, better lighting throughout the park and safe and secure play and sports spaces.
They also hope to introduce more CCTV to improve the safety of the park and integrated public art and heritage trails.
The masterplan is not yet finalised and Cardiff Council are currently carrying out a four-week online consultation to gather feedback on it.
Once the consultation is complete a plan will be drafted and discussed by the council as to whether the improvements will go ahead.
