Population says report
through a new local development plan which is being finalised.
It also wants to shift the economy to well-paid, skilled and knowledgebased sectors, like IT, computer sciences and life sciences. This is because the amount of goods and services Swansea actually produces - a measurement linked to an area’s affluence - is considerably lower than the UK average and just below the Wales average.
Leaders in Swansea and three neighbouring councils hope this can be tackled through the Swansea Bay City Region’s £1.3 billion city deal, which comprises 11 projects focusing on life sciences, energy efficiency and advanced manufacturing, among others.
The overview of Swansea’s population, demographics and geography is contained in an annual review of the planning department.
It said: “Swansea lies at the heart of the Swansea Bay City Region and the nature of future growth and development management will be critical to shaping the regional geographies of South West Wales.
“In particular, the aspirations for the city region seek to significantly boost economic investment and activity, with a substantial uplift required in development, including housing.”
The report also said Swansea had 519 listed buildings and 31 conservation areas.
It said more than half of Swansea was of “significant ecological interest”, and that its landscape was of “critical importance”.
