Gallery’s appeal for art fans’ support

-

SWANSEA’S art fans are being urged to get behind a city gallery in its bid for new national recognition.

People across the city are encouraged to vote for the Glynn Vivian as it competes against other shortlisted venues in this year’s Heritage Angels Awards.

Voting can be done online – www.bit.ly/ Voteglynnviv - before midnight on Sunday.

Robert Francis-davies, Swansea Council’s cabinet member for investment, regeneration and tourism, said: “With just a few days left for voting, I ask Swansea people to show their support one of our city’s cultural gems.

“The Glynn Vivian’s shortlisting proves that its staff and supporters are employing best practice to give a new lease of life to the gallery.

“Our work on this historic and treasured building was innovative and sympathetic. Since the reopening, visitor figures have been very encouraging indeed.” The Heritage Angels Awards celebrate people who make a difference to Wales’s heritage. They are driven by the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Wales.

Welsh winners will be announced on November 8. An overall UK winner will be announced around three weeks later.

The Glynn Vivian is shortlisted in a category titled best major regeneration of an historic building or place for projects in excess of £5 million. It reopened two years ago after its £9 million overhaul. It attracts thousands of visitors.

Shows at the gallery now include Journeys between Art and Life: Richard Glynn Vivian (1835-1910), and Dylan Thomas: Music of Colour.

Artists exhibited since reopening have included Pablo Picasso, Turner, Monet and da Vinci with works by Damien Hurst and Roy Lichtenstein currently on show.
