WOMAN HURT AS SCAFFOLD ‘HIT BY LORRY’

- LAURA CLEMENTS & ROBERT DALLING

A WOMAN walked away with minor injuries after being hit on the head by falling scaffolding.

Eyewitnesses say a Swansea Council refuse truck coming around Dunns Lane in Mumbles collided with scaffolding outside Davies of Mumbles bakery, causing it to collapse, hitting a woman on the head and dragging her underneath the vehicle.

A South Wales Police spokesman said yesterday: “At around 10.30am this morning police were called to an incident on Mumbles Road, where a refuse collection lorry had collided with scaffolding, causing it to fall into the road.

“A 43-year-old woman suffered minor injuries as a result of the incident.

“She was treated at the scene by paramedics.

“The road has been closed to allow for the scaffold to be removed.

“Motorists are advised to avoid the area for the next few hours.”

The manageress of Solo, Beverley Cull, and assistant Laura Alexander, were on hand to help immediately after the incident.

Ms Cull said: “We did what anybody would do under the circumstances.

“We have all seen this before with people sitting outside waiting a long time for an ambulance and wanted to make things comfortable for her.

“She was terribly shaken up, she took a big hit on her head and had very bad back pain.

“We brought her in here out of the cold and she stayed here waiting for the paramedics and a doctor, who were excellent.”

The scaffolding had been erected outside the bakery for exterior works to be carried out.

Manageress of Davies of Mumbles, Eve Roberts, said: “We heard the noise and saw the vehicle coming round the corner, we could hear the lady screaming. We didn’t know if anyone had been hurt.

“We called the police and ambulance service as the lady involved was in shock.

“Police came quickly as did the paramedics and doctors. We asked her if she would like to come in but she didn’t want to be anywhere near the scaffolding so went next door into Solo.

“The lady had no serious injuries and it was a miracle nobody was seriously hurt.

“Police closed the road and re-opened it at 12.50pm.

“Everybody’s thoughts are with the lady involved. She didn’t go to hospital, she had a bang on the head but was conscious and they left her go home.”

A spokesman for Swansea Council said the incident involved on of its smaller refuse vehicles.

He added: “A member of the public was treated and discharged at the scene and our employee who was driving the vehicle was uninjured.”
