BOMB SQUAD CALLED AFTER ‘IED’ FOUND!

A MAN found a box with wires coming out of it and ‘IED’ written on top of it on his car bonnet the day after Halloween.

It sparked a police incident on the Gurnos estate in Ystradgynlais yesterday, with officers telling people to stay away from the area.

The owner of the Seat Ibiza car, upon which the ‘device’ was found, who asked not to be named, has described the shock of his discovery.

He said: “I came out to my car at about 8.30 to 9am and saw something sat on the bonnet.

“I thought it was someone’s leftover takeaway from last night so I picked it up and put it on the floor but thought it was too heavy.”

Then he noticed the message.

“It said ‘You will worry, IED, trick or boom’ and I could see wires in it,” he said. “I don’t know what was going through my head, I was thinking ‘is it real or not?’ I rang 999 and the police came straight away and the bomb squad detonated it.”

The box also carried the famous picture of Lord Kitchener from the wartime ‘Your country needs you’ recruitment posters.

The man believes it could have been a Halloween prank.

He added: “I didn’t check my car until this morning after 7.30pm last night and it was parked in the residents’ car park on Spencer Terrace. I just thought this was a quiet area and nothing like this would ever happen.”

A spokeswoman for Dyfed-powys Police said earlier: “Dyfed-powys Police is currently dealing with a report of a suspicious item at Spencer Terrace, Lower Cwmtwrch.

“The item is described as a small box. Road closures are in place in Spencer Terrace and Heol Abraham, and a cordon is in place as a precaution.

“An Ordnance Disposal team is on their way and members of the public are asked to avoid the area so the incident can be dealt with safely.”

The area has since been re-opened to the public.
