RACE Council Cymru marked the 70th anniversary of the Empire Windrush’s arrival in Wales with a special presentation at the Mansion House on Monday to celebrate the “Windrush Elders”.
The MV Empire Windrush, a former cruise ship carrying Caribbean migrants, answered a UK Government call for a new generation of workers to help re-build Britain after the war. It was an honour to join the High Sherriff in recognising the contributions that the Windrush generation have made to South Wales.
This evening, I will be celebrating the achievements of the apprentices employed by the council in their annual awards ceremony at the Mansion House. We now have more than 100 apprentices working across a range of council services.
Tomorrow I will be joining staff and children of Birchgrove Primary School as well as older members of the community as they hold a 1940s themed tea dance as part of the Don’t Dance Alone campaign.
Loneliness is a growing problem, and Don’t Dance Alone aims to raise awareness of the issue.
There’s a concert of remembrance at St Mary’s Church in the city on Saturday, and on Sunday I finish my week at Swansea’s Santa’s Time Travelling Adventure. Jam-packed with fun, there will be dancing, family entertainment, processions, choirs and spectacular shows, from 4pm in the city centre.
