Body of man ‘in his fifties’ found after beach search

A MAN’S body has been found near a harbour in Carmarthenshire.

The discovery followed a large-scale search of the areas between Burry Port and Pembrey on Wednesday by police officers, coastguard teams, fire and rescue teams and RNLI crews.

Eyewitnesses said a search was taking place on Pembrey Beach and in the sea, with a coastguard helicopter doing a ‘sweep’ of the area.

Police confirmed on Wednesday night that the body of a man, believed to be in his 50s, was recovered from the scene. They are working to establish the man’s identity, and the death is currently being treated as unexplained.

A spokeswoman for Dyfed-powys Police said: “We received a reported sighting of a body on the beach between Pembrey and Burry Port at around 4.15pm on Wednesday, November 14.

“A multi-agency response took place to recover the body of a man, believed to be in his 50s. Officers are following lines of enquiry to establish the man’s identity.” The emergency services were still in attendance late on Wednesday night, with one local resident describing the scene.

“There was about 12 police vehicles, coastguard vehicles, fire crews and underwater search boats,” said Peter Tully, who lives in Pembrey.

“The incident was on Cefn Sidan Sands around half a mile from the Burrows. There were police all over the place down here.”

The Welsh Ambulance Service confirmed two rapid response vehicles and an emergency ambulance attended the scene, while rescue boats from the fire service were also in attendance.

A spokesman for Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service said: “We were requested to assist by police at 4.59pm.

“A swift water team from Carmarthen and a fire crew from Kidwelly were in attendance. All crews left the scene by around 7.40pm.”

Dyfed-powys Police said there are not believed to be any suspicious circumstances surrounding the death, which is being treated as “unexplained”.
