Historic church which sold for £1 back on the market

A CHURCH which sold for just £1 four years ago is back on the market.

The grade two listed 19th Century building closed as a church in 2003 after storm damage.

The building, which has stained glass windows and impressive pillars and font, then sold for £1 to a developer.

St David’s Church, on Picton Terrace in Carmarthen, is now back on the market with a guide price of £50,000 plus.

Sean Roper, from Newport-based Paul Fosh Auctions, said: “We have handled a number of churches for sale at auction over the years but this is certainly the biggest we have ever sold. It’s a really impressive piece of property.

“We’re selling the property on behalf of the developer who bought the church previously but who now says he has his hands full working on a number of his other projects including the renovation of a castle in north Wales.

“St David’s Church is an impressive grade two listed building which has listed building planning consents. There has been some work done on the roof and also initial improvemen­t work carried out internally on the church.”

The former church, which is just a short walk from Carmarthen with shops such as Debenhams and Next, could be converted to flats or town house style properties, subject to planning permission.

Mr Roper added: “There may also be options for community use or commercial use subject to planning.

“The property is believed to have been constructe­d between the years of 1835 to 1837 and there are many stunning features internally including stained-glass windows and impressive pillars to each side of the building.”

The former church, along with some 70-plus other properties, will be offered at Paul Fosh Auctions on December 6 at The Park Inn Hotel, Llanedyrn, Cardiff, at 5pm.
