Electric vehicle fleet prove a green winner at awards night

SWANSEA Council’s green credentials have been recognised at a UK awards ceremony after being named the best ‘green fleet’ in the UK for public sector organisations.

The council recently launched a 40-strong fleet of electric vehicles as part of a drive to cut CO2 levels and reduce fuel costs for the council.

The introduction of the fleet of fully electric vans means the council can reduce CO2 emissions by approximately 100 tonnes each year.

In recognition of the efforts by the council, it has been named ‘Public Sector Fleet of the Year’ at the annual Green Fleet Awards. The council beat a number of other local authorities including Leeds Council and Falkirk Council, along with Yorkshire Ambulance Service.

Andrea Lewis, cabinet member for homes and energy, pictured, said: “I was pleased to introduce low and zero carbon emission vehicles into the council’s corporate fleet.

“I am absolutely delighted that the work we have done as a council has been acknowledged by winning the Public Sector Green Fleet Award.

“We currently have the largest local authority electric fleet in Wales and we will expand this further, making a huge contribution to cleaner air across Swansea.”

Mark Thomas, cabinet member for environment and infrastructure management, said: “Getting the recognition of the Council’s green fleet on a UK level is a great achievement and highlights our intentions to the rest of the country about our concern for the environment and the measures we are taking to improve things.” The award comes ahead of the council’s plans to adopt a Green Fleet Policy which is set to b e presented to cabinet later in December. The policy will look to build on the success of the new electric fleet and seek to continue the changeover from petrol and diesel vehicles to electric where possible.

The council’s fleet of around 750 vehicles cover a distance of approximately eight million miles each year. The objectives within the new policy will look at new technologies linked to vehicles and reducing its use of fossil fuels.

Mrs Lewis added: “Our plans to introduce a Green Fleet Policy will take this work on further and ensure we are doing all we can to meet a variety of targets including lowering emission levels, increasing use of electric vehicles and managing our fleet more efficiently.”

“I’m personally delighted we are looking at the introduction of this new policy as it is something I have been keen to see adopted for a number of years.”
