Man dies and motorway is closed after car hits sign along M4

A MAN has died after an early morning crash on the M4.

A blue Vauxhall Vectra was the only car involved in the crash near the Pont Abraham roundabout, in Carmarthen­shire.

Fire crews said the car had hit a motorway sign in the are and the motorway was closed for a period.

The alarm was raised shortly before 4am on Friday and emergency services were sent to the scene. Dyfed-powys Police said: “Sadly the driver died. His next of kin has been informed.”

The eastbound carriagewa­y was closed for several hours to allow for investigat­ion work but reopened around 9am.

Police are appealing for any witnesses to get in touch by calling 101 and quoting reference DP-20181207-023.

It was one of a series of crashes on the roads in South Wales yesterday morning as the region was battered by heavy rain and strong winds.

Another person was taken to Glangwili Hospital after a crash on the A476 between Tumble and Llannon, in Carmarthen­shire.
