Advantage goes when you decide to leave

-

D SAGE (Letters, December 7) in asserting “the EU played unscrupulous games instead of negotiating genuinely” is to misunderstand that anyone voluntarily deciding to leave an association automatically is placed at a disadvantage.

Likewise why should 26 nations succumb to the will of one country which only narrowly voted to leave it in an advisory only referendum?

Caroline West in the same edition tells us to “walk straight out of the EU without a backward glance”.

Nothing could be more irresponsible and would have dire economic consequences for years to come, especially for the people of Wales.

Further, this isn’t how nations of culture behave and is reminiscent of leaders who walk out of conferences in a fit of pique!

Insisting a further vote would result in a similar outcome is to dismiss poll after poll which reveal a substantial remain majority.

Ms West may have swallowed all the false information the referendum fed us but if Britain is to maintain its long established reputation as a real democracy it must accept what was offered in 2016 was an affront to the word’s meaning and this would have been true whichever side won the ballot.

Therefore let’s have a People’s Vote to settle the issue when the truth is finally revealed.
