A COUPLE have described their terror after being pinned under a car when a vehicle hit them while they were on their way to a baby scan.

Sean Birdsey and his girlfriend Megan Walters were on Orchard Street in Neath heading to the bus station when they were hit by a car on Tuesday, December 3.

Both of them, as well as the driver, were taken to Morriston Hospital.

Miss Walters, who is expecting a baby girl in May, was given a scan at the hospital to check on her baby and it confirmed a strong heartbeat.

Mr Birdsey, from Pontaradawe, said: “We were walking to the bus station on our way for a routine baby scan.

“The streets were busy, the kids were just about coming out of school.

“As we walked past Argos, a car pulled out of a parking spot.”

They claimed: “It knocked us both down and I was on the floor, underneath the car, screaming for him to get off the accelerator.”

Ms Walters, who is 15 weeks pregnant, was struck at the same time and got pinned down underneath the car, she says.

Mr Birdsey said bystanders at the time were also shouting at the driver to cut the accelerator.

South Wales Police closed Orchard Street to allow them to carry out investigations.

Although several days have passed since the collision, Mr Birdsey says the “frightening experience” has left him too scared to get back in a car.

“I’m even struggling to get to the front door,” he said.

Mr Birdsey said they were both struggling to sleep at night, having nightmares and he is on medication to help with back and neck pain, and is also on crutches. Ms Walters, who lives in Neath, has bruised legs.

The couple are now waiting to find out exactly what caused the car to drive into them.

“We are just so grateful to everyone for helping us on Tuesday,” Mr Birdsey said.

“Especially to all those at Gwyn Hall cinema, which was opposite, and some of the staff in Argos. They came out with first aiders and warm blankets to try and help.”

A spokesman for South Wales Police confirmed the force is still investigating the incident and no arrests have been made.
