WELSH ‘superhero’ Captain Beany is to appear on an episode of Channel 5’s Blind Date in search of love.

Born Barry Kirk, in 1991 he changed his name by deed poll to Captain Beany.

He began painting his face and bald head orange (later even getting it tattooed), donned a golden cape, pants, gloves and boots and began raising thousands of pounds for good causes.

In late January 2009 he opened his own home to the public, calling it Captain Beany’s Baked Bean Museum Of Excellence – which is the top-rated thing to do in Port Talbot according to Tripadvisor.

But despite his generous dedication to helping others, Captain Beany remains a bachelor.

So he went to the ITV studios in London in April to be one of the three people hoping to be chosen by a future blind date.

Blind Date involves one person asking three members of the opposite sex questions about them.

The questions are answered from behind a screen, meaning the contestant has to choose which person they will go on an all-expenses paid date with based purely on their answers.

Mr Beany, who introduces himself as Captain Beany from Planet Beanus in the programme, said he was torn between wearing his orange suit or his superhero outfit, but that they chose for him to wear his superhero outfit.

“I was asked which kind of woman I am looking for,” he added. “I said I am looking for a suitable woman — with corned beef, fried eggs . . . so we can walk around as a full breakfast.

“I am looking for my future wonderwoman.”

Mr Beany said he decided to go on the programme because he thought it could be the start of a future relationship, even if the programme was about entertainment.

He said he wanted to find someone who would accept his eccentricity and his “half-baked outlook on life”.

He added: “I am an edible bachelor — I am still suitable and free.

“I have been single all my life and I have never been married.

“I am looking for someone with a great sense of humour who is full of beans and who has got a saucy outlook on life.”

Captain Beany has stood as an election candidate in Aberavon on a number of occasions, initially as the ‘Real Bean’ candidate, then as the sole member of the New Millennium Bean Party, and most recently, as an independent candidate in the 2015 General Election, as Captain Beany again.

Captain Beany said he was quite flattered when he was asked whether he would be interested in going on the programme.

He has said previously that his life has had a few half-baked romances, but that “I have never met my future tin of beans, and I haven’t got any bean sprouts”.

Of his appearance on Blind Date, he added: “You’ll have to tune in to see if I find love.” ■ Captain Beany’s episode will air on Saturday from 7pm.
