Gower’s new addition full of links to the past
A NEW Iron Age roundhouse has cropped up on Gower.
Gower Unearthed have built the new facility in Parkmill, funded by the Welsh Government.
Helen Nicholas of Gower Unearthed said: “We were running field trips centred around the pre-history of Gower, all around Gower but often in Penmaen, focusing particularly on the Celts, and we identified there was no visible or practical demonstration/experience for pupils/community groups to engage with.
“We recognised that similar projects had a successful offering and we could offer something locally with similar potential. We could see that it added to rural and community regeneration, and archaeologically it’s a visual indication of our rich Celtic heritage.
“We will be using it with schools to study Celts, etc. It’s also our new base and facility for community groups, we are setting up a youth eco committee with local councillors at present.
“We hope to add to the roundhouse and create an Iron Age community. Volunteers have been key, as has the commitment of our builder. People recognise a huge asset to the area as we begin to tell the story of Gower’s rich heritage, passing it down to the next generation.”
The scheme is funded by the Welsh Government and supported by Gower Heritage Centre.
