YOUR VIEWS ON: SEVERN
BRIDGE TOLLS
THE Severn Bridge tolls have officially been scrapped. Here’s what people think about it:
PAUL BRADBURY Now everyone will pay for the bridge . . . removing the charges completely will mean your taxes will now be paying for maintenance and upkeep, when it would actually have been a perfect opportunity to greatly reduce (say to £2) the toll charge, but still get some revenue towards the upkeep. Plenty of technology exists to simply video charge vehicles (like the Dartford Tunnel does). Nothing is free.
SHEILA SNOOK I’m sure they’ll make the money up with speed cameras!
ED THOMAS I don’t really care about the Dartford crossing, but the reality is that there is no alternative for South Wales and it should be free for us to be able to travel back and forth. I really don’t think it should cost £5.60 for a car to travel across the bridge once the cost of its construction has been cleared. I already pay enough tax on my company car per year. They’re making more than enough off people, it’s just that the Government wants to spend money on things like HS2 just to knock 20 minutes off a journey between Manchester and London.
PETER COLLIER It’s all our money, you will pay for the bridges via road tax.
PICKERCYMRU Now the next problem is bypassing the Brynglas tunnels. Removing tolls will speed extra traffic to Newport.
CLIVE DAVIES There are loads of signs saying there are average speed cameras in force, this is due to the roads changing from very wide lanes to a three-lane motorway. The simple answer to not getting a ticket is not to speed.
