Uni’s first virus case has been confirmed
SWANSEA University has confirmed its first case of coronavirus.
The university, which has two campuses in the city, made the announcement yesterday afternoon.
On Friday, it was announced that the university would be suspending all face-to-face teaching from March 23 because of the coronavirus outbreak.
That was brought forward to the end of yesterday.
The university has also cancelled all its forthcoming open days.
In a statement released on social media the university said its first confirmed case “is not a surprise given the rapid spread of the virus”.
The statement said: “We do now have our first confirmed case of coronavirus at the university.
“This is not a surprise given the rapid spread of the virus.
“Our advice to staff and students remains the same; to continue following guidance from Public Health Wales.”
It said face-to-face teaching was being suspended at the end of the day.
“We are already moving to online teaching from
Monday, March 23 - in practice some teaching may be delivered online earlier than this date.
“The situation for medical and nursing students is different and for all courses leading to a professional registration in the Medical School or the College of Human and Health Sciences, students have been advised to wait for further information from their school or college.
“The library and other teaching and learning facilities will remain open, as will other campus services, including halls of residence, but the situation is constantly under review.”
