School stays open after scare over pupil illness

GWYROSYDD Primary School is remaining open despite previously considering closing after a pupil was said to have suspected coronavirus.

The school in Treboeth took to social media yesterday morning to advise parents they might have to pick up children early if it was forced to close.

The statement detailed how a parent had informed staff that their child “may have coronavirus”.

However, a letter sent to parents yesterday afternoon explained that the school had been “thoroughly” cleaned, and encouraged parents to send their children to classes, unless they were ill or showing signs of illness.

The school stated that it would also be open as normal today – and Swansea Council later confirmed all city schools would remain open for time being.

The letter, from Gwyrosydd head teacher Jonathan Atter, said: “Thank you for your support and understanding this morning.

“All staff have spent the morning thoroughly cleaning the school. This has included all surfaces, chairs, computers and even books and learning resources. We can now say that our school is extremely clean! The school has remained open today and will be open as usual tomorrow.

“We encourage everyone to send your children in, unless they are ill or showing signs of illness.

“If you think you or they have signs of the virus, please follow government guidance and self-isolate for seven days. The school will continue to follow guidance in terms of hand washing and cleaning, and continue a thorough regime of cleaning surfaces and doors, etc.”

Mr Atter added: “We are looking into any other actions that may be necessary including what we will do if school is advised to close. More information will follow.

“We wanted to get the information to you as soon as possible that we have cleaned, school is open and we look forward to seeing the children unless they or you are ill.”

Last night, a spokesman for Swansea Council said: “We want to reassure residents that, in collaboration with our partners, all necessary steps will be taken to ensure the wellbeing of our communities.

“At the moment council services remain open. Following the government announcement today [Monday] we will be assessing the position and making further detailed announcements.

“Government guidance is that schools should remain open for the time being. The message to parents is that, as in other areas of Wales, schools will open tomorrow as normal and the position will be kept under continuous review.

“Residents and parents are urged to follow the Government’s revised social distancing guidelines and anyone who is experiencing symptoms should continue to follow Public Health Wales advice.”
