A JEWELLERS in Swansea city centre was the scene of a fire in the early hours of yesterday morning.

Emergency services were called to reports of a fire at Crouch in Oxford Street at around 3am.

The cause of the fire was being investigated yesterday. Eyewitness Keiran Ivett, aged 30, from Swansea, was walking home from the city centre when he saw Oxford Street “lit up with fire engines”.

He said: “There were two or three of them (fire engines) and police cars blocking off the street.

“We could hear the alarm in the shop they were trying to break into, but couldn’t see any smoke or fire so it seemed odd to have such a big response team come out.

“After a minute or two they finally broke the locks on the shutter, and as it came up all the smoke came out and it started to fill the sky as they continued to try to force their way in.”

A spokesman for Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service said: “Crews from Swansea Central and Swansea West attended a fire at a commercial property in Oxford Street, Swansea city centre.

“The fire was located on the ground floor of the property and was extinguished using four breathing apparatus, one hose reel jet and one jet. Hydraulic spreaders were also used by the fire service.

“Firefighters isolated the electric supply and ventilated the first floor of the property using a positive pressure ventilation fan.”

South Wales Police also attended.

Crouch has been approached for comment.
