Stay positive - for city’s sake

- LESLEY WALTON

TO rephrase what I said in my recent letter (Evening Post, May 18), and following Councillor Peter Black’s letter on May 20, I would say constructive questioning is an important part of the role of scrutiny.

And of course this applies to all councillors, regardless of political party.

But my real point was querying how that is sometimes done, or at least perceived to be done, in that it can come across as being negative, and doing down the city.

Specifically, I think some of the recent comments from opposition councillors regarding private investment have not been particularly helpful.

In my view, and I’m sure other people would agree, it’s this kind of talk which can harm prospects for the city’s economic growth.

So it is indeed fantastic news that the future of the Debenhams store in Swansea now looks a lot brighter.

This has resulted from a lot of hard work caried out by Swansea Council, led by chief executive Phil Roberts and council leader Rob Stewart, which has been going on behind the scenes.

Personally I am very glad we have such an ambitious team driving Swansea forward.
