Festival fun brings out a host of scarecrows

A SCARECROW festival will become a regular event in Bishopston after it made its debut on bank holiday Monday.

There were 49 entries, with judges walking for five miles to cast their eye over all of them.

Organiser Sharon Latchford said it came about after two scarecrows appeared outside The Valley Hotel, courtesy of landlady Val Weeks-halsey.

“Val explained that in many areas of South West England and beyond, villages hold annual scarecrow festivals,” said Mrs Latchford.

The idea took root, and the word spread on Facebook.

Neighbouring Murton and Manselfield also got involved in the event.

“To sum up, we had an outstanding fun day, it really confirmed what a great community we have, and everyone deserves praise for it,” said Mrs Latchford.

Bishopston councillor Lyndon Jones donated some of his community budget as prize money.

The winners were Kes and Ianto Wood, followed by Flo and Wilf Poulter, Glyn Allen and Theresa Hemming, Jonah and Rowan Percival, Toby and Sam Phillips, and Cynthia Riley.

Mr Jones, who was one of the judges, said: “It was a fantastic effort by everyone and made the judges’ task a very difficult one.”
