NHS and emergency service workers swapped their uniforms for wetsuits this weekend for a free surfing lesson with Surf School Wales.

The impacts of Covid-19 have been testing on us all and more so on the people working within the NHS and Emergency Services. That’s why Surf School Wales based on Aberavon Beach, Port Talbot, invited NHS and Emergency Services workers to a free surf lesson this weekend.

On the weekend of world mental health day, the sun was shining and anxious NHS and emergency service workers turned up to swap their uniforms for wetsuits. Surfing can have a profound impact on not only a person’s physical wellbeing but also their mental wellbeing.

Those who come surfing are given a chance to

recharge their energy levels, it can renew positivity and release signs of stress.

The local Surf School who are passionate about the benefits of surfing wanted to give something back and thank the people in their community for the important role they play, but also wanted to remind them that no matter how important your role is, nothing is more important than looking after yourself and your own wellbeing.

Gemma is a paediatric nurse in Morriston Hospital and said she felt really nervous before the session and nearly cancelled as she didn’t feel fit enough to do it. When asked how she felt during the lesson, Gemma said: “An amazing rush of endorphins, I felt like I had overcome my fears.”

Pria works at a Covid testing unit and said she thoroughly enjoyed, much more than she ever thought. She said: “I was so nervous, not only about the surfing, but general

anxiety hasn’t been great for me so this was a big step – but a step I am so glad I took.

“I felt alive! I felt so much calmer, happier, relaxed.”

Clare James has been nursing for 26 years and said how 2020 has been the toughest year in her career as they were hit hard as a team. She said she had lots of fun within a supportive environment and after the lesson she felt invigorated with a sense of achievement and would definitely recommend to colleagues.

Surf School Wales were unsure whether to open this year, but put all of the necessary Covid-19 procedures in place to protect its staff and customers.
