Mum says damp problem making her family ill

A SWANSEA Council house tenant claims she has battled with damp and mould from floor to ceiling in her home for the last four years.

The woman, who did not want to be named, also claims her two children, aged six and one, have been made ill as a result.

“I have been fighting to have it sorted for the last four years. I have treated it myself time after time, they (the council) have treated it a couple of times, but it keeps coming back,” said the mum, who is pregnant with her third child.

Photos from inside the house in Penlan in Swansea show damp covering the walls from the floor to the ceiling.

The mum claims the issue is in every room in her house and inside her cupboards.

As a result, she discovered her little girl’s clothes had grown mouldy, and the family experience health issues.

“My little girl sleeps in my room next to a cupboard with damp and mould, she has a constant cold.

“My son suffers with skin problems on and off

which is caused by the damp and mould.

“I had a blood clot on my lung when I was pregnant with my little girl. It is making us ill.”

She said the council have treated the mould on multiple occasions in the

two-bedroom semidetached home, even installing insulation by the bathroom – but nothing seems to work.

Recently, someone came to clear the mould and damp, however the pregnant mum was advised by the person who attended to do the work that she should request they come back after she gave birth due to the chemicals involved in the cleaning.

The mum has since been told that the damp is a result of “environmental issues”.

“I have used all the mould and mildew cleaners, I have tried different ones to see if it will work, I have done it over and over again.

“It is in every room in my house, it is around my door, in my cupboards, on my walls.”

A spokesperson for Swansea Council said: “We having been dealing with the tenant’s concerns about ongoing problems at the property which we believe are the result of condensation inside the home.

“Several attempts have been made with the tenant during the past year to treat the mould problems and a number of potential dates were put forward to allow our maintenance teams access to complete the treatment.

“Unfortunately, we have previously been unable to reach an agreement on any of the dates put forward. The property was inspected on Thursday and remedial work has now been agreed.”
