Let’s create some play-off momentum, says Whittaker
MORGAN Whittaker wants Swansea City to enter the play-offs on a high.
Whittaker scored against his former club on Saturday as Swansea battled back to claim a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Derby County at the Liberty Stadium.
It was a win that lifted Steve Cooper’s men to fourth in the Championship and means they will face either Bournemouth or Barnsley in the playoffs later this month.
Whittaker believes the win was crucial to maintaining Swansea’s momentum, and he hopes for more success when his side travel to Vicarage Road on Saturday to meet already promoted Watford.
“Anything can happen in the playoffs so it’s good to have that momentum,” said the 20-year-old.
“These two games could easily have been games where we didn’t play our stronger teams or got minutes for people, but I think it’s important to take good momentum into the play-offs.
“I haven’t really thought about who we will play.
“I think as a team we will back ourselves against any of the other three teams.
“As long as we focus on ourselves, we will be all right.”
Before his headed equaliser against Derby, his previous Swansea goal had come in the FA Cup defeat by Manchester City.
Whittaker celebrated by putting a finger in each ear.
“I am over the moon,” he said. “It was my first Championship goal so obviously I think I am going to celebrate.
“It was meaning no disrespect to Derby. It was about us getting the points and keeping the momentum going.”
