YOUR VIEWS ON: CALL TO SCRAP FREE STORE PARKING

-

TESCO is looking to scrap the free parking arrangement at its Swansea city centre store car park, asking the council to pass a ruling that would mean people have to spend £3 in its store if they want to park there. You said . . .

SARAH GOOSEY I came here a few years after it was built, but doesn’t planning permission for supermarkets in city centres being given normally depend on them having parking as a fairly universal thing? Are they starting this application now in anticipation of the new arena causing increased parking demand? PETER THOMAS Tesco only got planning permission for the store as long as it provided two hours’ free parking for city centre visitors. They can’t be allowed to change the rules. The city centre is declining as it is, this will kill the city centre. People want free short-term parking or they will go to Trostre.

The council doesn’t provide free parking so why should Tesco? It is their car park, and if you’re shopping there it will be free. If you’re not shopping there you should not be parked there. ANDY LAITH Course they do. It’s up to Swansea Council to say no, that was the agreement and why we let you build your massive money maker in the first place! JAMES HAMILTON Not doing other traders any favours, are they? They get the passing trade from free parking. HAUL PENRY I just don’t go into town. No free parking anywhere and everything is available online. Why would I pay for the privilege of spending my own money?
