Family left shocked as car crashes into garden

A CAR smashed through a fence into a garden where children play on a Swansea housing estate.

The vehicle crashed into the wooden fencing at the rear of the property on Heol Barcud in Birchgrove on the evening of May 14, shocking residents who were preparing for bed.

One resident whose property was damaged has now called for traffic calming measures on the estate, which she says has witnessed an increase in speeding vehicles since the coronavirus lockdown began.

Rebecca Williams said: “We’ve lived her for seven or eight years and it’s been quite quiet in that time, but since lockdown began we have people speeding around here in the evenings.

“Youngsters are driving on the mountain road on to the estate, and there have been a number of times they have only just made the corner.

“On this occasion my children had fallen asleep on top of me when we heard the crash. A car flew through the garden fence and into ours and our neighbour’s garden.

“We went out to see what had happened. My neighbour is a paramedic who was in bed. He was lucky because there is a tree in his garden which changed the direction of the car.

“Fortunately no-one was hurt but it could have been so very different.

“But if it had been the daytime, our children could have been playing in the garden.

“A few neighbours say they have been calling the council for years to get something done about the traffic”.

Mrs Williams said she has contacted the authority to raise concerns and called for speed calming measures and reinforced bollards at the junction of

Ffordd y Mynydd.

A Swansea Council spokesman said: “Wherever there appears to be a regular occurrence of incidents of speeding vehicles it should be highlighted to the police and Gosafe for them to take initial action.

“We do speed surveys to assess the scale of the problem, and when we get the results we’ll consider with our partners if appropriate measures are necessary”.

A South Wales Police spokesman said: “We were called to reports of a road traffic collision shortly after 11.30pm on May 14.

“A 19-year-old man has been arrested and charged with driving while over the prescribed limit. He is due in Swansea Magistrates’ Court on June 2.”
