Saints prove too good for former champions

THERE was one match played last Thursday night in the Absolute Bowls Swansea Bowling Associatio­n and in difficult conditions home side Victoria Saints secured a well-earned victory over 2019 champions BSC Landore.

The score was 46-29½, 10-2 on points.

The top rink for Victoria Saints was Paul Brown (making his debut for the club), Eric Burdett, Ray Allbrighto­n and skip Mark Dunbar, and they defeated the rink skipped by Bill Potter 21-8.

BSC responded with a win for the rink skipped by Clive Davies, who despite playing short beat Simon Davies 13½-12. He was ably supported by Rob Dawson and Martin Legg.

In the other rink played, Victoria’s John Higgins defeated Matthew Bithell 13-8.

Dunvant v Old Landorians and Sketty Church v Parc Llewelyn were both postponed.

On the weekend there were five league matches played,

In division one, Hafod faced a tricky home match against Dyfatty, who had secured their first victory of the season on the same green against Parc Llewelyn the week before.

But in a sensationa­l match Hafod gained a 70-60 victory, 10-2 on points.

The Hafod rink of John Rosser, Steve Grey, John Phillips and skip Norman Burgess bowled brilliantl­y to defeat the rink skipped by Russell Smith 39-7, and they were well supported by Kenny Robinson, David Hart, Colin Thomas and skip Glyn Griffiths, who finished 26-16 up against John Court

The visitors had a big win themselves with Kevin Thomas, Anthony Thomas, Luke Marks and skip Robin Thomas beating the rink skipped by Gordon Grey 39-7, but this big win was not enough to secure victory for the visitors.

BSC Landore were home against Parc Llewelyn in a rearranged match at Coedgwilym Park and after two defeats on the trot it was the hosts who recorded their first win of the season, beating the visitors 61-43, 10-2 on points.

The top rink for the home team was John Mills, Mike Leworthy, Peter Bolch and skip Bill Potter, who defeated Kenny Davies 33-5.

Parc Llewelyn’s points came from the rink skipped by Don Batcup, who with Reg Draper, Terry John and Alan Waters defeated the rink skipped by Matthew Bithell 21-9.

BSC Landore’s other points came from the rink skipped by Clive Davies, who just got the better of Neil Mcclean 19-17.

In division two, Morriston United, who were playing their first match of the season, were up against Llansamlet at home and in a tight match they just got the better of the visitors 54-52, 10-2 on points.

The top rink was Rob Cozens, Brian Norman, Mike Burton and skip Alan Rees, who defeated the rink skipped by Paul Jenkins 22-16 – this included a count of three and four on the 19th and 20th ends to swing the match Morriston’s way.

The rink skipped by Steve Beddoe just got the better of Llansamlet’s Mike Hill 16-14.

The Llansamlet four of Kevin Davies, Brian Thomas, Ray Michael and skip David Jenkins secured Llansamlet’s points with a 22-14 victory over Lyndon Havard.

Tawe were again home and after two defeats were looking to get back to winning ways when they hosted Mumbles, who were playing their first match of the season.

Tawe recorded a big victory, 70-33, claiming all 12 points on offer.

The home skips of Paul Richards, John Warwick and Dennis Richards defeated the rinks skipped by Nigel Richards, Huw Vaughan and David Hopkins 26-12, 27-9 and 17-12 respective­ly.

CARRUTHERS SHIELD

Dunvant were home to Briton Ferry Steel but lost 62-81.

Old Landorians were away to Port Talbot Ynys and the home team recorded a narrow 73-68 win, putting the visitors out of the competitio­n.

Sketty Church hosted Port Talbot Municipal and completed a convincing victory 85-38.

Swansea were home to Bryn and recorded a comfortabl­e 79-57 success, while Victoria Saints came away from BFS Combine with a very good 62-54 win.

MIDWEEK LEAGUE

SECTION A There was an exciting match in Dunvant Park, where home team Dunvant finished all square 50-50 with Sketty Church and the points went 4-6 to the visitors.

Victoria Saints completed a comfortabl­e home victory against Mumbles 51–26½, the hosts claiming all 10 points on offer.

The Swansea v Clyne Valley match was postponed.

SECTION B Llansamlet were at home to Hafod but it was the visitors who won a thrilling match 54-55, 6-4 on points.

Parc Llewelyn suffered a home defeat against Mynyddbach 32-58 with the visitors picking up an 8-2 victory.

Tawe were successful at home in Skewen Park. completing a comfortabl­e win over St Thomas 47-30¼, picking up all 10 points in the process.

WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON RINK LEAGUE

SECTION A: Dyfatty 15 Llansamlet A 12, Hafod B 9 Eastenders 17¼, Jersey v Hafod A postponed.

SECTION B: Sketty Church 15 Mynyddbach Blues 26, Bryn Road 8 Tawe 29, Llansamlet B 13 Dunvant 22.

The fixtures for this Saturday (May 29) have been cancelled due to Swansea City’s involvemen­t in the Championsh­ip play-off final at Wembley. Clubs will be given a date when these matches will be played.
