Title race opens up as top two both fall to defeat

WITH the top two teams in the premier division both suffering defeats, the battle for the title in the Swansea & District Table Tennis League is hotting up.

A much weakened Port Talbot Gas Club A stay top after narrowly going down 17-16 to Carmarthen C. In the penultimat­e game Scott Cundy put Gas Club in front with a fine 3-0 win, but Ray Richards stepped up for Carmarthen, winning the last game 3-1, giving him match figures of 9-3 and securing the victory.

Penyrheol A stay second despite being beaten 19-15 by Penlan A, for whom Nancy Yeh won 9-4.

Penlan B moved into third place following their good 27-3 victory over Carmarthen D.

With both Penlan teams having a game in hand over the two leaders the scene is set for a very interestin­g title battle during the second half of the season.

Carmarthen B remain just outside the top four after a fine 27-0 win over bottom team Port Talbot Gas Club B.

A mid-table battle between Carmarthen A and Betws Rugby Club proved a very close affair, but steady performanc­es from David

Lloyd and Nicky and Kurtis Marsh gave Carmarthen a deserved 19-15 victory despite Catherine Jones winning 9-1 for the losers.

Cam Gears A beat Cam Gears B 27-0, which leaves the B side dangerousl­y close to the bottom of the table.

Division one leaders Port Talbot Gas Club D maintained their lead with a 19-11 victory over Penlan E despite Craig Henton winning 9-1 for the losers.

Cam Gears C moved up the table with a 25-8 win over Penyrheol C, Graham Butler winning 9-0 and Doug Smith 9-3.

Penyrheol B maintained their challenge by beating Port Talbot Gas Club C 25-9, Tony Holt winning 9-2 and Alan Pattle 9-3.

Penlan D secured a 27-7 win over Cam Gears D, Liam Owen winning 9-0, Paul Bamsey 9-2 and Aaron Churchill 9-5.

Penlan C maintained their challenge with a 25-5 win over Carmarthen E, with Mannie Tang and Cai Llewelyn both winning 9-1, while Port Talbot Gas Club E beat Penlan F 27-5 with Ryan Hewett winning 9-1 and Stuart Landeg and David Evans both winning 9-2.
