Morriston take an early lead

THERE were several matches played in the Swansea Fish Swansea Bowling Associatio­n last Thursday night due to clubs being involved in the first round of Carruthers Shield games on Saturday.

In division one Morriston United were playing their first home game of the season when they hosted Coedgwilym at Morrison Park, and they put in an impressive display to defeat the visitors 71-45, 11-1 on points.

Morriston won on all three rinks, with the rink of Rob Cozens, Richard Neville, Andrew Berry and skip Alan Rees top-scoring, defeating Bob Penn 29-12.

Other rink scores: Lyndon Havard 20 Billy Potter 13, Steve Beddoe 22 Clive Davies 20.

Champions Dunvant were up against Jersey in Dunvant Park and got back to winning ways, 69-50, 9-3 on points.

The rink of Kevin Curtis, Wendell Roberts, Huw Richards and skip Andrew Jones were instrument­al in Dunvant’s success by defeating Jersey skip Rhodri Johnson 32-11.

Paul Rees just got the better of Jonathan Keaveny 19-15, and Jersey’s points came from the rink of Alan Mages, Willie Shannon, Chris Morris and skip Edward Johnson, who let an early 11-0 lead slip to be down 14-13 at the halfway stage before recovering to defeat skip Dai Rees 26-18.

Parc Llewelyn were home to Old Landorians at their temporary home in Jersey Park. The visitors won on all three rinks to win 86-40, 11-1 on points.

The rink of Sullivan, Voyle, Lloyd and Morgan ran riot and defeated Neil Maclean 46-10, their score including two sevens and a six.

Michael Hartnoll 21, Kenny Davies 12 Anthony Hartnoll 19.

Old Landorians go up to second with this victory.

In division two on Thursday two unbeaten sides met at the De la Beche green, and hosts Dyfatty beat Hafod 81-53, 9-3 on points.

The rink of the impressive Anthony Thomas, Glyn Pugh, Roy Green and skip Brian Thomas paved the way for the victory with a 38-11 win over skip John Rosser.

Russell Smith just edged out Colin Thomas 21-17.

Hafod’s points came from the rink of Ken Mcmurray, Malcolm Leyshon, Steve Gray and skip Norman Burgess, who pipped skip Robin Thomas 25-22.

Tawe were well beaten at home by Mynyddbach 56-35, 9-2 on points.

The Mynyddbach rink of John Williams, Allister Fleming, Huw Williams and skip Nigel Cornell were the match-winners, defeating Steve Price’s rink 27-7. The other two rink scores were closer affairs.

Tawe’s points came from the rink skipped by Ian Florence, who finished 16-15 up against Roy Fethney.

A depleted St Thomas side lost heavily at home to Mumbles at Jersey Park 53-29¼, 11-1 on points.

The Mumbles rink of Bernard Taylor, Elsie Taylor, Reg Roberts and skip Brian Fuller defeated skip Neil Crocker 23-9.

Other rink scores: Gordon Whitehouse 9¾ Dave Strachan 19, Russell Evans 10½ Huw Williams 11.

It was top v bottom at Primrose Park where Llansamlet took on leaders Clyne Valley, and it was the visitors who maintained their unbeaten start to the season, winning 48-47, 9-3 on points.

The rink of Roy Adams, Joy Lang, Bob Topliss and skip Roy Lang beat the rink skipped by Mike Hill 23-12, which proved decisive.

Other rink scores: Dai Jenkins 22 Roland Page 11, Paul Jenkins 13 Gerry Grigg 14.

On Saturday there were four second division matches, the pick of them Dyfatty v Mynyddbach at the De la Beche green. Dyfatty won 66-47, 9-3 on points.

The top rink for Dyfatty was Rowley Williams, Francesco Souta, Ray Griffiths and skip Russell Smith, who had an excellent game and finished 29-12 up against Nigel Cornell. The rink skipped by Robin Thomas defeated Peter Locke 24-17.

The visitors’ points came from the rink of Dai Fisher, Lyn John, John Matthewson and skip Huw Williams, who beat the rink skipped by Brian Thomas 18-13.

Dyfatty go top with this success, six points ahead of Clyne Valley and Hafod.

Two newcomers to the Swansea Bowling Associatio­n, Landore Social and Tyn-y-twr, met at Beaufort Road, and it was the Baglan visitors who won, 72-40¾.

Rink scores: Jeff Mcallen 17¼ Glyn Williams 21, Dai John 10½ Dai Selby 23, Andy Lewis 13 Brian Morris 28.

Mumbles went down heavily 82-28 to Hafod at their Oystermout­h green, 10-2 on points.

Hafod recorded three big rink wins, with Roger Stead, John Phillips, Ken Mcmurray and skip John Rosser defeating Brian Fuller 29-5, Sid Richards, Steve Gray and skip Brian Evans finished 25-14 up against Dai Strachan, and Ken Robertson, Malcolm Leyshon, Steve Edwards and skip Norman Burgess completed a clean sweep by defeating Huw Vaughan 28-9.

St Thomas were home to Waunarlwyd­d (ALCOA) and recorded their first win of the season, winning a very close match 51-49, 9-3 on points.

It was rink of Brian Bridgewate­r, Billy Hall, Dawn Hinder and skip Russell Evans that proved the difference, beating Graham Cooper 20-10. Neil Crocker narrowly defeated Keith Hunter 18-14.

Waunarlwyd­d’s (ALCOA) points came from the rink skipped by Mark Felsted, who finished 25-13 up against Gordon Whitehouse, though it was not quite enough to secure a victory for their team.

The Tawe v Llansamlet match was postponed as Tawe could not raise a team.

THERE was a brilliant result for Toby Warren and Jon Cox from Swansea Bowling Club when they played in the Weston-super-mare Visually Impaired singles competitio­n.

There were 40 competitor­s from all over Britain taking part in the competitio­n, which was held over four days last week.

The competitio­n was run on a league basis, with Warren and Cox topping the table after winning all their eight games, and Warren was crowned champion by virtue of a better shots difference.

It was a tremendous achievemen­t by both players and a credit to their club and the Swansea Bowling Associatio­n.
