Tributes pour in for former councillor

-

TRIBUTES have poured in for a well-respected former Llanelli councillor who has passed away.

Penny Edwards died on May 22 following a long illness. She had served on Llanelli Rural Council for five years, following in the footsteps of her late husband.

The council said it extended its sincere condolences to her family.

Mrs Edwards was elected to Llanelli Rural Council in May 2017, giving loyal service to the Hengoed ward constituents.

She served on all of the council’s main standing committees and represented it on a variety of outside bodies.

Council clerk Mark Galbraith said: “Penny decided to become a councillor after she was persuaded to stand following the death of her late husband George Edwards, who also represented Hengoed ward. Sadly, she decided to stand down at the elections in early May because of ill health.

“During her time with the council she always displayed a positive disposition and performed her role admirably.

“Regrettably, Penny’s ill health escalated towards the end of her term of office but all the while this did not deter her from supporting the work of the council. Penny was an inspiration to us all.”

Council chairman Giles Morgan said: “I’m deeply saddened by the news and I know she will be missed by all those that had the pleasure of making her acquaintance. I will always remember Penny as a genuine and sincere lady who cared very much about her community.

Council leader Sue Lewis added: “Penny was my aunt and my thoughts and prayers go out to her two sons Marcus and Glyn, Emma her daughter-in-law and Penny’s grandchildren.

“Penny was loved by so many because she was so good to everyone who knew her.”
