SMITH ONE OF FIVE TO BE LEAVING GLAMORGAN

-

SCOTLAND international Ruaidhri Smith is one of five players to be leaving Glamorgan. Smith, whose debut for the Welsh county came in 2013, will make his exit when his contract expires at the end of the season.

Also leaving are Lukas Carey, Joe Cooke, James Weighell and Tom Cullen.

Smith, 28, was a key figure for St Fagans as they retained their South Wales Premier League title this season.

He was mainly used by Glamorgan in white-ball cricket in recent years.

He appeared in 67 matches across his nine-year spell.

Seamer Carey, 25, made his firstclass debut against Northamptonshire at Swansea in 2016 and went on to make 70 appearances across all formats.

All-rounder Cooke, 25, joined the club in 2019 and made 29 appearances, while Weighell (28) signed last year and played 36 times.

Australian wicketkeeper Cullen signed in 2017 and featured in 36 matches for Glamorgan.

The county’s director of cricket Mark Wallace said: “There are always tough decisions to be made when planning for the future and assessing the make-up of the squad.

“All the players leaving have made significant contributions to the club.

“I would like to thank the players for their commitment to Glamorgan during their time here and everyone at the club wishes them the best for their future endeavours.”

Meanwhile, Glamorgan start their LV= Insurance County Championship encounter against Derbyshire at Sophia Gardens tomorrow (10.30am).

David Lloyd’s men will be looking to bounce back from last week’s disappointing defeat at Middlesex as they aim to secure promotion to division one.

And they will be pinning their hopes on an improved batting performance as they twice struggled for runs at Lord’s.

Glamorgan haven’t beaten Derbyshire in Cardiff since 2014 when they came out on top by 106 runs.
