Jane Fonda takes the title role in this breezy musical comedy Western. She plays an aspiring teacher who discovers a corporatio­n is out to take her father’s land. Cat hires gunslinger Kid Shelleen (Lee Marvin) to fight their corner, only to discover he’s a washed-up drunk.

Kind Hearts and Coronets

Wednesday, Film4, 11am Sir Alec Guinness (right) delivers eight tour-de-force performanc­es in this Ealing black comedy. The film revolves around the eccentric d’ascoyne family – all played by Guinness – whose fortune proves a temptation too great for relative Louis Mazzini (Dennis Price), who schemes to murder family members who stand in his way.

Philomena

Thursday, BBC4, 10pm Based on a true story, journalist Martin Sixsmith (Steve Coogan) helps retired Irish nurse Philomena (Judi Dench, above with Coogan) look for the son she was forced to give up to nuns in the 1950s. A tender and unexpected­ly touching relationsh­ip forms between these two characters from different generation­s and background­s in Stephen Frears’ emotional yet uplifting movie.

The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert Friday, BBC1, 11.35pm

Take a bevy of Australian drag queens shimmying across the outback to a gig in Alice Springs, add a bus (called Priscilla) and sprinkle with disco hits and Oscarwinni­ng costumes and you have the surprise hit of 1994.
