Boss says it would be sweet to back local firms

-

THE owner of an independent sweet shop and dessert business is urging people to shop locally and at independent stores whenever possible, after seeing a massive decline in custom following the launch of a Greggs bakery chain on the street.

Vicky Evans initially launched Yummy Bears as an online sweet delivery service in 2020 while working as a pharmacist, but as the business became more and more popular, she decided to bite the bullet and have a change of career and moved Yummy Bears from online-only to a physical shop in Gowerton 18 months ago.

While recent poor weather has affected the number of customers through the doors, as has the lack of parking on the street; the opening of a Greggs bakery chain on Sterry Road, the same street as Yummy Bears, has also had a massive impact on customer numbers.

“Since Greggs has opened, we have seen a decline in customers. We’re suitable for everyone, we’ve got traditional sweets, sweets for children, American sweets etc. – but we do usually have a lot of school kids coming in after school,” she said. “After Greggs opened, the children have been going there for their treats and after they’ve had a cake at Greggs, they’re obviously not coming to us to have sweets or a waffle or ice cream.”

While Vicky doesn’t want to bash Greggs and is grateful the firm has created jobs in the area, she is appealing for people to support independent businesses more frequently. “We need support from people. For a small, independent business to stay open, we need help,” she added.

Vicky’s plea comes after she took to social media to ask fans to like and share her page to spread awareness of the business further.

She wrote on Facebook last week: “Please could I ask that you all give our page a like/share Yummy Bears Sweet shop, we’ve noticed a massive drop in sales since Greggs has opened, we didn’t think it would have an impact on us but sadly our sales have dropped massively, today being one of our worst days since opening.

“It’s an already difficult time for small businesses especially with the awful weather and lack of parking in Gowerton, so please if you can support us please do for us to keep our store open.”

As well as a variety of sweets and treats, Yummy Bear also serves waffles and ice creams, at an “affordable” price point, Vicky said.

You’ll find a wide range of options available – Vicky’s favourite is the “waffle topped with strawberries and white chocolate”.
