RE: Blitz on cycling in Chapel Street.

I like to think I am a good lawabiding citizen. However, I cycle down Chapel Street to avoid Lord Street as it’s very dangerous for cyclists there and I will continue to do so.

But when I cycle on Chapel Street, I barely go faster than someone walking briskly. I am regularly overtaken by people on mobility scooters which can sometimes go very fast. The issue is the idiots who speed down there on their bikes.

It’s usually younger people, often the ones who ride BMXs with their pants on show, who dodge in and out of people dangerously and without a care in the world.

But how can you differentiate from one cyclist to another when it comes to laws?

I realise it’s a tough call for police who are doing what they’re told to.

However, I was stopped once by a policeman whilst riding my bike at walking speed.

I was with someone by my side who was walking. The policeman was arrogant and irrational in his attitude towards the rules.

I was in full hi-vis clothing. I had a GoPro camera on my helmet and when I suggested we view the footage together, he left me alone.

They need to show some restraint. I would much rather they stop the kids on bikes who ride at night on the roads, wearing black, with their hoods up, no lights, no reflectors and an apparent death wish.

It’s more likely for them to cause a serious accident or fatality than someone riding slowly down Chapel Street in broad daylight.

Adam Yaffe Via our Facebook page put bike lanes in there if there’s such consistent problems?

Why don’t they put their attention towards the bike thefts that’s been a massive issue, or the drunks and people begging constantly in the station and on Chapel Street, usually swearing their heads off and being abusive towards people?

Great first impression of Southport.
