We’re desperate to get out and play says Lawson

- BY RORY O’CALLAGHAN

SKELMERSDALE United manager Tommy Lawson says his side are “itching to play” following a recent spell of postponements.

Skem’s match against Witton Albion was called off on Saturday due to a waterlogged pitch, United’s second postponement in as many weeks.

Lawson said: “As

a squad were obviously frustrated, we’re football people after all so it’s disappointing not to play. However, we’ve been using the time off to train well and there’s a real unity in the squad now as a result.

“We pride ourselves on our fitness. We’re only ten weeks off the end of the season and the squad are in really good shape.

“All the lads are gagging to play and there’s a real buzz about our next game so hopefully it doesn’t get called off.”

Skem’s next fixture is at home on Saturday against relegation- threatened Stamford, a team Lawson’s side beat 3-1 earlier in the season. However, Lawson believes Stamford’s seventeenth placed position in the table is deceptive.

He said: “I don’t think it’s going to be an easy game. If you take a look at their scores recently they’ve only been losing by the odd goal and they managed to get a win last week.

“When we played them earlier in the season they looked a decent side but we played well on the day and got the win. We’ll be treating them with the respect they deserve.

“I think their current league position is a lie, they started the season in exceptional form so we know they can make it tough for us.”

Lawson says the lack of game time has helped his squad to return to almost full fitness, with goal- keeper Martin Fearon close to a return from injury.

Lawson said: “Martin has started training with the squad again now which is great. He’s been made up with the postponements as it means he’s got a few extra games that he would have missed out on.

“Unfortunately Tom Ince has had another setback with his knee. He actually picked up the injury against Stamford last year but it’s looking like he might be out for the rest of the season which is a shame because he’s a wonderful player.”
