Police in appeal for help after ‘assault’

A35-YEAR-OLD Southport man was arrested after a gun scare on Weld Road beach in Birkdale. Officers were called to the car park that leads toward the beach at around 9.50am last Friday (May 20), following reports that a man had been seen in the sand dunes with a ‘firearm.’

Police discovered what is thought to have been an air gun and a knife at the scene.

They then arrested a man on suspicion of possessing an imitation firearm in a public place and possession of an offensive weapon.

He was taken to a police station for questionin­g.

A police spokesman told the Visiter: “Merseyside Police can confirm a man has been arrested this morning (Friday, 20 May) following reports of suspicious behaviour in the sand dunes near to Weld Road, Southport.

“A member of the public contacted police at around 9.50am to report a man with what they thought was a firearm - officers attended and a 35-year-old man from the Southport area was arrested nearby on suspicion of possession of an imitation firearm in a public place and possession of an offensive weapon, after officers recovered what is thought to a air weapon and a small knife.

“He has been taken to a police station where he will be questioned.”

The man has since been bailed by police.

Anyone with informatio­n about the incident should call police on 101 or Crimestopp­ers on 0800 555 111. POLICE have released a photograph of a man they would like to speak to following an alleged assault in Waverley Street.

Police said a 27-yearold woman was reportedly ‘assaulted’ by a man, when she was ‘pulled to the floor’ on Waverley Street at around 4.30am on Sunday (May 22).

Police said the woman had followed a man from a nearby bar after an allegation had been made about the theft of two mobile phones.

She wasn’t badly injured but suffered grazing to her hands, legs and feet.

The man is described as being in his mid-20s, between 5ft 8in-5ft 10in tall, of slim to medium build.

He was wearing a dark coloured jacket with a zip, a red T-shirt, blue jeans and khaki green baseball cap.

Police have issued a photograph of a man they believe could help them with their enquiries.

The man, anyone who recognises him, or anyone with any informatio­n about the incident, is asked to contact Merseyside Police on 101 or the confidenti­al Crimestopp­ers line on 0800 555 111.
