Knockout blow sees Bury bury cup dream

-

SOUTHPORT Trinity’s fixture at Spring View fell foul of the weather on Saturday with the match being called off without a ball bowled.

Sunday’s LCB Knockout tie at Bury looked like it may suffer the same fate until a major mopping-up exercise followed by welcome sunshine allowed the game to finally get underway just before 4pm, in a contest reduced to 16 overs a side.

Trinity were stuck into bat in difficult conditions but Shaun Robson (30) and Shaun O’Neill (22) blasted their way to 43 from the first four overs to give The Rookery men a great start.

Bobby Eyes (19) and Mark Warren (17) kept up the momentum allowing Trinity to post a very respectable 128-9 from their 16 overs.

In reply, West Indian pro Akil Greenidge soon set about the Trinity attack as Bury reached 84 without loss from 10 overs before the Bajan was bowled by Bobby Eyes for 60.

A quick flurry of wickets followed to leave the hosts 96-4 and the game was in the balance right up to the last over with nine runs needed. However a couple of boundaries saw the home side through to the next round with two balls and four wickets to spare.

Mike Sears’s second XI lost a good game to Skelmersdale at The Rookery on Saturday. Batting first, Trinity posted 188-5 with Hodge (50), Campbell (46) and Nolan (43) top scoring. In reply, dropped catches proved costly as Joe Till (49) and Phil Wright (64) saw Skem home with five wickets in hand.
